Developing Story: The Insider, a conspiracy or the ultimate truth.

Six days into the release of Infinity's top title "Call of Duty Modern Warfare II" some interesting facts ar
starting to rise.

And we are about to make an unveiling discovery by only taking a closer look at the date's.

On February 11, 2009 the sixth sequel of Call of Duty was announced and as with most Call of Duty released the community
couldn't wait for this new release.

The amount of rumors went through Infinity's rooftop because of the radio silence from Infinity Ward. In fact, there has never been such a silence with a Call of Duty release in it's history. But this radio silence was about to be broken by the rumour that
the sixth release would have no dedicated server support.

On October 15 2009 a large GSP breaks the silence with a disturbing message that Call of Duty Modern Warfare II
was going to be delivered without dedicated server support and the implementation of IWNET.

The PC community was shocked, and it even got much worse.

On November 15, exactly 5 days after offical release a community member was able to enable the in-game console and discovered that most of the ingame cvars (Client side Variables) where a direct copy from the Xbox version. This while fourzerotwo stated that this rumour was false.

Even stranger was the change of Anti-Cheat software. Call of Duty has always been protected by the software "PunkBuster" developed by Even Balance Inc., but because of switch to IWNET and Steam PunkBuster was replaced by VAC2. While PunkBuster had some weak holes with their detection methods it had a large Anti-Cheat communitys due to the controlability of the software.

While all these changes to the game occurred, a strange event happened. On November the 10th, the release date of Call of Duty Modern Warfare II a well known cheat community announced that their first cheat was available for download and a video of the hack was published on YouTube.
Image

A few hours later the video was removed due to a copyright claim of Activision Games Inc.

Now it isn't uncommon that a cheat gets released on the day that a game gets released, there are even times that they are released before the game reaches the stores, but this time it's different.

Taking a closer look at the cheats post on this website reveals that it was posted on "November 8 2009", for the people that don't see the connection: "Thats 2 days before release!.

But now, how is that possible if there was no public beta? In fact, there was only an INTERNAL beta. And there it gets interesting.

Image

On November 14, a community member posted a topic where he revealed that the dedicated server functions were still in the game code, but where just disabled.

In a response to this post Infinity Ward demanded this developer to stop his work on his version or to face legal consequences, his post was of course deleted. Now obviously you can't deny that they are right, they own the copyrights.

But why do they threaten a harmless developer with legal action and ignore the cheat developers completely?
They have all the resources to remove these cheat websites from the internet and trace these corrupt developers back to where they belong. At least.... if they are not having benefits from these cheats themselves.

So what benefits could a game developer have with cheats for his own game?

Well... Making double, triple or even double triple sales of the games licence through "private" keystores that these websites provide?

How much evidence do you need?

Still, all suspects are innocent until proven guilty, keep that in mind.

College student is accused of modifying consoles for personal financial gain

Playing with video games can lead to hard time, just ask Matthew Lloyd Crippen.

The Cal State Fullerton student was arrested Monday on federal charges that he illegally modified Xbox, Playstation, Wii and other video game consoles to enable the machines to play pirated video games.

Crippen, 27, of Anaheim, was taken into custody Monday morning by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. The arrest follows his indictment by a federal grand jury on two counts of violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Specifically, the college student is accused of modifying for personal financial gain technology affecting control or access to a copyrighted work, according to an ICE statement.

Each criminal count carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

The charges against Crippen stem from an ICE investigation initiated late last year after the agency received a tip from the Entertainment Software Association.

Last May, ICE agents executed a federal search warrant at Crippen's home, where they seized more than a dozen Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony video game consoles.

Playing with games in this way is not a game -- it is criminal, said Robert Schoch, special agent in charge of the ICE investigations office in Los Angeles.

Piracy, counterfeiting and other intellectual property rights violations not only cost U.S. businesses jobs and billions of dollars a year in lost revenue, they can also pose significant health and safety risks to consumers, he said.

Counterfeiting and piracy have grown in recent years in both magnitude and complexity, according to ICE. Industry and trade associations estimate that counterfeiting and piracy now cost the U.S. economy as much as $250 billion a year and a total of 750,000 American jobs.

Some estimates indicate that 5 percent to 8 percent of all the goods and merchandise sold worldwide are counterfeit.

Crippen was expected to make his initial federal court appearance late Monday in Los Angeles.

When Anti-Cheat enters the Unknown (Linked GUID's):
Article by: !AR!BlackHawk - SEO Admin Request Networks

While the anti-cheat community was formed back in the old gaming days, nobody ever thought that the system itself could turn into a self destructing program.

Something that might damage the reputation of many respected anti-cheat organizations currently available on the internet.

To understand the situation we need completely understand how the anti-cheat system has developed throughout time. Let we take the example of the well developed program "PunkBuster" produced by EvenBalance Inc. back in the year 2000.

PunkBuster was one of the first tools actually able to counter the growing amount of multiplayer cheats. It gave game server administrator and game developers a large amount of tools which enabled them to catch cheaters and set custom game rules.

The anti-cheat software itself automatically checks all the client side settings & files and compares them against a blacklist with known client side cheats. If a cheat got detected it automatically prevents the player from playing on the server and places them on a ban list managed by EvenBalance Inc.

While this worked for a long time (and still does), there have always been some technical issues which couldn't be solved. As the system was developed to detect cheats through a blacklist the system first requires the cheats to be processed by PunkBuster.

This has one major drawback, because unknown (private cheats) do not get detected until the PunkBuster software’s is able to recognize the signature of the cheat file. Because of this, many people have felt left down by the software because new cheats don't get detected until EvenBalance decides to target the cheat that gets used. The frustration of this issue caused small groups to create their own system, using PunkBuster to spread a custom ban list to the game servers that have signed up.

This very clever idea functioned very well but had one issue. Many cheaters use more than 1 GUID to cheat on a game, or have different games.

To satisfy the community some "smart" people came up with the idea to link all IP's to the GUID used by the players that enter the server protected by their ban list. This way if a user performs a GUID search on a users GUID, a list of all GUID's used on the clients IP will be displayed, including the ones that have been banned by the community.

On itself this is a very harmless tool, but if misused it could turn itself into a very dangerous snake. Because having a "linked GUID" to a GUID that has been banned, don't proof that the person also cheated on the other GUID's, and don't even proof if it was the same person.

Many (if not nearly all) internet service providers (ISP) assign dynamic IP addresses to their clients. This means that there IP address can change every hour/day/week/month/year (depending on the ISP's wishes). This means that I could end up with the IP address of a user that cheated on a multiplayer game.

This would result in my VALID GUID being linked with the GUID of the cheater. Still, this doesn't say much yet, but if I change IP again and someone else was so unfortunately to end up with the IP of the old cheater, his GUID would end up linked to him too.

Repeating this process would end up with hundreds of IP's linked to GUID's of cheaters and non cheaters, destroying the accuracy of the whole system. And all of this, just because we want to know if a person has already been cheating before so we can "preban" or deny a user without valid proof.

So do we really want to go that far with the risk of destroying the accuracy & trust into the system?
